Dear PreK Families,
While I didn’t want to inundate you with papers, there are a few things I do want to mention as we enter into this uncharted territory together and try to keep as much normalcy as we can for our kiddos. There are a number of schedules floating around suggesting how days should look during this time - and there is a reason for that. Kids this age thrive on consistency so offering that to them can only help them and you navigate these days. I don’t think you can go wrong with any schedule, so choose something that works for your family. I would love to offer my two cents about the most important things to include in your child’s day to keep it as close to our school day as possible though!
Wake and have time to acclimate to the day. Eat breakfast! Do get out of PJs and prepare for the day ahead. Monsignor plans to do Prayer and Pledge on the CKS Facebook page, so you can check that and start your day!
Check ClassTag! I will post our activity by 9 am at the latest each day.
Read together for at least 30 minutes a day - together could mean in the same room quietly while you work, with siblings who can help or truly together looking at letters and words at the same time in the same book.
Get outside! Moving our bodies is very important for our brains too.
Rest time - 30 minutes of quiet, calm activity alone does wonders for kids this age! Here is the meditation app/site I use at rest time each day: https://kidsapp.stopbreathethink.com/
Unstructured playtime where kids need to use their imaginations - outdoors or indoors. They run the show so it will look different in each kid and in each day. This can be crafts, dramatic play, LEGO building, whatever captures their interest in the moment. (Full disclosure: I sometimes have to set a timer and tell my own kids to go in the other room and entertain themselves until the timer goes off. They usually play long past those 30 minutes once they get in there.)
Limit screen time as best as you can. I am realistic and occasionally my daily assignment will utilize screens. Some days will be easier than others! :)
These are not school days, but providing a somewhat similar structure to our days can help in a myriad of ways.
We are in this together, and we’re all doing the best we can with a unique and unprecedented situation. Please keep the lines of communication open! We will all be missing our little classroom community in the coming days. Also, I want to provide activities the kids will enjoy and you can easily implement so let me know what your kids are enjoying and what they aren’t.
See you on ClassTag!
